First and foremost, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Roberto Granatti Sensei, who planned and hosted BUDOSPRING 2026 and extended a kind invitation to Philip and myself. I am truly humbled by his warm and thoughtful hospitality. I also wish to thank Luigi Carniel Sensei, who treated us with such kindness and provided us with truly insightful lectures.

On the final day of the seminar, for the benefit of those participating for the first time, I began by revisiting the definition of Budo and explaining the fundamental differences between Budo (the martial way) and Bujutsu (martial techniques).

In the morning session of Day 2, we reviewed the previous day’s topics while focusing on deeply exploring the essence of Budo through hands-on experience. 日本語はこちら The lecture began with a reflection on the spiritual philosophy of Budo, centered around the poem Yamato-kokoro (The Spirit of Yamato), passed down by the late Master Minoru Mochizuki. In terms of technique, I used Koryu Judo (traditional Judo) as an example to explain the principles of pain-free ukemi (breakfalls)

On the morning of May 1st, after enriching my mind and body through Roberto Granatti’ Sensei’s Gyokushin-ryu and Roberto Fagnani Sensei’s Qigong classes, I was given the opportunity to lead a lecture of my own.

I was honored to be invited to the opening ceremony of BUDOSPRING 2026 which organized by ASD Taki no Kan Verona, Shodan Dojo Sovicille and Judo CUS Siena in collaboration with the international organization Koryu Budo Seifukai held on April 30th at the magnificent Accademia del Rozzi in Siena, Italy.

While we were in Auckland, Philip and I had the pleasure of sharing dinner at the Japanese restaurant Gion with Consul-General Shinji Matsui and his wife, along with Shihan Takase and his wife from Aikido Shinryukan - an organization with 25 dojos across New Zealand and many branches overseas.

What I most wanted to share there was this: Seiryoku Zenyo, Jita Kyoei is a first principle, something you put at the very beginning of any conversation about value creation. Whether in business or government, you can set out the most impressive policies and goals, but if the decisions being made on the ground don’t match them, if they aren’t actually directing effort toward the right things and building the right kinds of relationships with the right people, then value won’t

Value, Valuism and Seiryoku Zenyo Jita Kyoei at the Oxford Business Alumni and Cambridge Judge Business School Speaker Event & Dinner

During this Perth Dojo Tour, we had the opportunity to visit seven dojos and engage in training with many instructors and students. Each dojo had its own unique character and philosophy, and throughout the journey, we could deeply feel the respect and passion each one held for budo. More than simply learning techniques, this tour reaffirmed for us the true essence of budo as a form of education.

The seventh stop on our Perth Dojo Tour was a seminar hosted by Yamato International Aikido, led by Head Instructor Murat Sensei, where I had the honor of teaching alongside Ezawa Sensei. The seminar was attended by instructors and students from several of the dojos we had visited during this tour, creating an energetic and collaborative learning environment.

The sixth stop on our Perth Dojo Tour was a black belt-level training session at Gyokunenkan. This session brought together instructors and black belts from different styles and dojos—a truly high-level and rare opportunity for shared learning. On this occasion, instructors from five different dojos gathered to train together, exchanging insights and studying each technique with care and depth. It was an inspiring sight.

The fifth stop on our Perth Dojo Tour was West Coast Aikido Martial Arts Academy. This was my second visit to this dojo, and once again, it was a truly wonderful experience.

The fourth stop on our Perth Dojo Tour was Kobukai International Budo, where we had the opportunity to train under the guidance of Head Instructor Darren Sensei.
