Perth Australia Dojo Tour – Kobukai International Budo

The fourth stop on our Perth Dojo Tour was Kobukai International Budo, where we had the opportunity to train under the guidance of Head Instructor Darren Sensei.

Darren Sensei’s techniques were filled with a quiet elegance and dignity that reflected his calm and warm personality. Each movement conveyed a deep understanding and thoughtful refinement. Even as we struggled to keep up with the unfamiliar techniques, he watched over us with kindness, offering careful instruction with a smile—an experience that moved us deeply.

What stood out most was how they have taken the jo (staff) techniques originally developed by Uuno Sensei and further evolved and elevated them to an advanced level of practice. Through the use of the jo, they carefully analyze and teach the structure of each technique, the mechanics of movement, and the subtle control of power required for effective execution. I am certain that this approach will have a lifelong impact on my own teaching.

Through this training, the jo practice at Kobukai International Budo opened up a new perspective and sense of possibility for the four of us. It reminded us that even the things we take for granted in our regular practice still have room for growth, and once again we felt the endless depth and richness of budo as a lifelong path of learning.

On a personal note, I was also delighted to meet the younger brother of Professor Bretto, the advisor of the UWA Aikido Club who had taken care of my eldest son. It felt like a warm and meaningful connection.

Lastly, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Darren Sensei and the instructors for their patience, sincerity, and generous instruction throughout our visit.
