Perth Dojo Tour – Kobukai International Budo

The second stop on our Perth dojo tour was a private lesson with Sensei Steve from Kobukai International Budo. One thing that really stood out to me was how he taught us to respond to an opponent’s attack—not with a direct counter, but by subtly leading into a technique that doesn’t feel like an attack to the opponent. This approach to breaking balance was both gentle and highly effective. It was a new and eye-opening experience for me.

His use of Jō (the wooden staff) was especially fascinating. The techniques were completely new to us, and we were truly impressed by how he used it. These Jō methods were originally developed by Uuno Sensei, and have since been further refined and evolved through the efforts of Darren Sensei.

These Jō methods were once developed to spread Mochizuki Aikido in Perth. Seeing those techniques being passed down and now being taught to us—Japanese visitors—by Australian practitioners… I have no doubt that Unno Sensei would be smiling from the heavens.
